When I first heard about Oil Pulling I was instantly intrigued. Being a dedicated user to white strips and whitening toothpaste anything I hear that will help to brighten your teeth and improve your overall dental health I am willing to try!
First of all what is Oil Pulling?
Oil pulling dates back to 3,000 years ago in the Indian medicine culture. There have been recent studies showing that oil pulling helps against gingivitis, plaque, and microorganisms that cause bad breath. There have also been studies showing it can help to brighten and whiten teeth. Oil Pulling involves swishing with a tablespoon of oil for about 20 minutes and then spitting it out.
I figured what do I really have to lose by trying this? Plus white strips make my teeth sensitive and I am passionate about keeping my teeth clean (you only get one set)! I went to Publix and literally stood in the oil section for 15 minutes trying to figure out what my best option would be. I knew after doing research that coconut oil is the best oil to pull with but there were SO many options. I am embarrassed to say I had never purchased coconut oil so I was pretty confused considering it looked like a solid not an oil. I later learned that coconut oil is a solid at room temperature. I ended up choosing Spectrum Coconut Oil. I took the coconut oil home and before I got ready for bed I scooped out a tablespoon and let it melt in my mouth (I am sure you could melt it before hand). Then I literally just swished it around in my mouth for about 20 minutes. After I spit out the oil I rinsed my mouth and brushed my teeth like normal. I have been repeating this for about 2 weeks now every night.
I had read some articles saying the taste of the oil was gross or it was unpleasant to swish it around. I didn’t have that experience and I think the coconut oil I picked was a great choice! The reason I felt so passionate to write about this is because I have seen such a difference in my mouth! It constantly feels clean and my teeth have absolutely gotten more white. I think this is an easy add-in to your nightly routine that will make a big difference! I also wanted to write this blog because when I first went to try oil pulling I was a little confused and wanted to relieve some of that confusion for all of you.
